@Dianthus Solarus is a very lightweight engine. It depends on the hardware that it's being played on, but I'm quite sure a quest of that size would be fine on any computer. If you plan on porting it to the RetroPi, then you may have to separate out your maps. Not much benchmarking has been done on RPi before as far as I know, but the Solarus quests already released run pretty well.

@Dianthus

Keep us informed! I'd love to see where this project goes.

Crooki, my boy, are you still looking? I'd totally do this if Max hasn't yet.

Game art & music / Zelda 1 Game Art

Hey, I'm one of the brosephs on the Zelda 1 Resource pack, and this thread will be a list of a bunch of art and music I've made that won't be going into the final pack. Be warned, it varies greatly in quality!

Up first is the overworld tileset. I've made two variations, one for nighttime and one that's terrible. I've also attached the real tileset for comparison.

We have two people working on an Oracle/Link's Awakening resource pack at the minute right now, actually! Maybe you could check out their work and collaborate a bit:

Katsu's been assembling one, but not actively working on it:

And Zunashy has been making a much more complete one on the Discord server.

I'm also personally working on a Non-Zelda GBC-style resource pack, if you're interested in seeing that.

Game art & music / Link's Awakening Art

Hey'all, I got bored today and threw together some spritesheets and tilesets for Link's Awakening (DX). I'll likely make a Gameboy-coloured version of all these, as well as all of the stuff like NPC's and items and bosses and stuff. I'm not making a full resource pack, but it ought to be a full set of sprites and tiles in case anybody else wants to make it into a resource pack.

I would love to help with music and sound. It shouldn't be hard for me to get the original audio from the game, but if there's any custom audio or music you'd like, I can try my hand at those too. We're all definitely excited for this project!

On the Solarus discord I'm regularly posting updates as I go, and from there you can help contribute as well!

The custom music arrangements are clearly a highlight! But everything in this resource pack will be great, I'm sure.
Do you have a link to where we can see your work, and contribute?

Your projects / Zelda 1 Resource Pack

Hey y'all, I'm new to the forums, just letting you know that CopperKatana and I are working on a Zelda 1 resource pack!

VISUALS:
The pack uses the original sprites from Zelda 1, many of which ripped directly from the ROM. The pack also contains sprites for several things not found in the original Zelda, including enemies, items, and tiles found in later Zelda games, including but not limited to Lizalfos, Cuccos, Pieces of Heart, Ocarinas, the Master Sword, and countless others. All of these sprites are in the glorious original 8 colours (plus white and black), made with the aesthetic of the original items, seamlessly blended in.
This is a sample of some of the items, many of which unchanged, many changed. (This isn't all of the items.)

AUDIO:
The pack includes all the original sound effects found in Zelda 1, with a few additions for new items. More importantly is the music, which contains the NES version of all the original tracks in high quality, as well as many additional pieces composed by myself, most of which being arrangements of familiar tunes from later Zelda games like Breath of the Wild, Ocarina of Time, and Wind Waker. All of these pieces are rendered in the highly precise and lovely NEScaline synthesizer, providing a seamless integration with the original tracks. Each of these tracks would be fully playable by the NES (although a few may require imagining a sound expansion chip).
Here's a sample of a track adapted from Breath of the Wild, Silent Princess.

GAMEPLAY:
The pack will contain a mix of old and new gameplay mechanics. New items mean new ways to play. We're planning on making something of a mix between Zelda 1 and more modern Solarus gameplay, taking the new abilities granted to Link and giving them an old-fashioned 8-colour coat of paint. Also, see what Link looks like without a shield permanently affixed to his right arm!

If you have experience with programming and can help us write scripts for the items, enemies, and heroes, we'd greatly appreciate the help. If you'd like to contribute original art, scripts, or music, feel free to post them below as well!
