Actually, I hesitated a bit before posting this thread, but I guess it might prove itself to be pleasant.

Well anyway, this thread is dedicated to conversations in english ONLY.

The purpose is to practice your written english, as other members can correct you.
People can talk about anything here, as long as it's in english.

All right, let's start ! For how long have you spoken english, and how did you learn it ?

I speak english since the age of 8, I learned everything during my stay in the US (1996-1998). My parents placed me in an american school, which was the "hard way" of teaching me english. Today I am in the International School of Lyon, preparing a "Bac International".

My english is bad ! But I've got "English Training" by Nintendo, this is super ! I'm progressed  :rolleyes: ... I'm in 4th (class) and english is my second language, my first language is Deutsch !

Well well well, I think I remember a thread "in English" was already started in this forum. It was a total failure, and if my memory is good it was due to a lack of real topic. Just saying "English here please" won't work, I really think this thead should have a topic.
Your question is a good start, but I don't think it will last long. But let's play along, we will see if the life expectancy of this topic is short or not another time.

So when did I start learning English? Well it feels like it was a long time ago (In a galaxy far far away... oops sorry wrong script :D) I started during what us French call "6e", taking three spoken languages: French (of course!) German and English. I was a bad student... Very bas, worst of the classe. My first marks where around 16 in German and around 8 in English. But as time passed, I started to really like English (I think my English and German teachers had a important part in this like/dislike matter) After two year of studying it was more like 16 in Englsih and 8 in German... I started German again from the beginning in "4e" and took an "European English" class.I made two trips to United Kingdoms during my scolarity, as part of the school program, one of ten days in "4e" living alone in family, and one of two weeks in "2nd". I failed my European Mention at the baccalaureat, too weak on the paper exam.
Then I think I found a way to really improve my skills in English: shortly after the baccalaureat I started to read English books. And that really really help. During my IUT I was first of the class (In English and In general :P)
I passed my TOEIC exam with 900 out of 990 points. After that my English teacher found me a placement in England, Cornwall. there I worked for three month, alone in the middle of a English speaking country, and I really think that's the best way to learn a foreign language.
Since then, I keeps practicing my English by reading books and watching movies, but I miss English conversation. And I think I am not as fluent as I was just after my work placement. I have lost a lot during my "Ecole d'Ingénieur" and now, as I'm not in contact with English speaking peoples at my work I don't really practice except for reading technical documents of course :).

I am very good to write english, because I have a lot of vocabulary, but I have somes difficulties to speak it.
I'm shy when I have to speak english, however, I am not shy to speak spanish or swedish, my two others language. (Im not speaking about the french, who is my mother language)

The only way to learn English well is to speak in English with people and watch some cartoons or movies in English. My English courses were very boring, in secondary. I did stupid crosswords, stupid listening and reading tests. Also, the majority of teachers doesn't have good technic to learn us English. All the time, I slept in my English class, because the activities were so boring.

I learned English at my summer Job, Reitmans. Many workers spoke English and I tried to Speak English with them. It's the best way to learn English easier than boring English courses at School.

I think it's important to know how to speak English, because majority of people speaks in English.... I know, that's a lot. French population is not so high in the world.

Maybe English language is important, but French will be my favorite language and I wish this language continues to grow in the world, forever.

My english is not very good...

You just need to practice. I didn't learn English quickly. I took many years to learn English.


Note: If someone sees mistakes, can you advice?  It's just to not repeat the same mistakes.

Obviously it'll depend on what kind of errors. I'm pretty confident with my English, but certainly not confident enough to correct someone else's expression!

For instance, I would have formulated your demand : "Now, everyone, when you see some mistakes, could please offer some advices? Just for the sake of avoiding repeating them."
But that's just my personal feelings. I might have mixed up "offer" and "give", not like I practice them all that often.

I learnt to speak in English in Grade 6, I was in Intensive English, a special school year, splited in two. One part you learn the general things (French, Mathematics, Geography), and then the other half, you only speak in English.

I'm not the best English talked of ever (I'm starting to lose my skill, need to pratice a little bit more), but I'm not that bad too. Whatever, this thread is somehow a good idea...

Anyway, I hope it won't finish in flood...

However, I would discus witch you about something that I hate as hell: You know these people that thinks that just because something is translated ( most of the time badly) in english, it will be cooler! WTF! Why is English always supose to be cooler and fashioner? Is really "The legend of Zelda : Ocarina of time" cooler then "La Légende de Zelda, L'ocarina du temps"? Here I don't speak to Nintendo and the others, I speak for gamers and makers? English nicknames are as good as french ones! It's alright. I agree with you on the point that english should definitely NOT replace other languages. However, in some cases, using another language can give a certain feeling to the title. As an exemple, I use latin a lot in my game ("Luce"), in title but also in play. This is to vehiculate a sort of ancient, religious atmosphere.

But I definitely agree that anglophone titles are too much used.

Yeah, english title are used a lot because all the "professional" games have their title in english. Personnaly, I think that english is too much present in the domain of video games. It would be cool if the games were made like Ubisoft, in the main language : English, French, Spanish, Deutch and Japanese. The developpement of the games would be much longer but almost everybody would play the game in their own language.

I noticed everybody says "Deutsch". In english, "allemand" is "german" ^^.

One title per country is also a real mess for the developpers. A unique title for everyone is quite simpler.

But still, you can find some games whose titles are localized as the games they are refered to (Dragon Quest VIII)

Well, "Deutsch" means "German"... In German ^_^.

Now, if the very same screen of the very same game suggests "Français" too, well it just means the game translates each language name... In this language ;). Which is quite the common rule... And somewhat common sense, too.

Ex : I can't speak français.

It is not a mistake. Each language is simply written in its own language. French is "Français", English is "English" and Japanese is "$&#%" :)

Hey Noxneo, this topic is a good idea as it could help everybody (me first of course XD).

Well, I'm French, and as everybody I have started learning English at school. Actually, I began it in CM1 (sorry, I don't know the name in English). I think I'm not so bad, I can understand a lot of things, and I'm used to speak with English people in some forums ; even if I have never had much than the mark of 12 in this subject ^^'.

That's all ! ^^
If you people want, I have a little joke (not so fun but we're here in order to speak, right ?) :

"It's a French man who decides to learn English. In order to do it, he's looking for a teacher in the newspaper.
After a while, he sees this announce : "Donne cours d'anglais pour tout niveau, 10¤ la leçon". The man writes the address, and go there to take his first lesson. He knocks at the door, and as a man opens it, he asked :
"C'est bien ici pour les cours d'anglais ?"
"If if, between" answered the teacher.

I am. It's my fifth year in european section (1ère).

Explanation of European section to those who don't know what we're talking about :
This is a special section, where students, during Junior High and High school get more english lessons, plus, for the 1ere and Terminale students, one then two hours a week of DNL (Discipline Non Linguistique) : either mathematics and biology or history and geography in english (thoses two last subjects are more intersteting, since you learn about British and American history, which are normally not taught).
In 1ere, students pass Cambridge's First Certificate, an internation certificate, which proves you speak english fluently enough to be able to work in any english-speaking country in the world. Then, in terminale, if you get at least 10 in the DNL bac's test, and 15 in english bac's test, then you get your bac with European mention.

Yeah, for me as an exemple, I had this year one hour and a half of history in English and two hours and a half of Biology in English. The matter : I don't know exactly the French words for Biology terms, so I had a very bad mark in Biology when it was the test between all the classes. Just enought to have more than 10 points, very bad :mrgreen:

So, I think I must work French terms of Biology if I want to rest alive the next year :lol:


But English is a good linguage easy to speak (exemple : "I like Zelda and Link" or "My flowers are beautiful", you see, it's very very easier than the german :ninja:), I like speaking English or reading heroic fantasy in English. Thanks to English, I can read the books of Raymond.E.Feist before everybody, very good :P

Anyway, I got the habit of watching many series in English with English subtitle for vocabulary. At the beginning, it wasn't really easier than I have expected. But I give this advice to anyone, who have in mind  to learn English whit happiness  :lol: It's better than play video games in English because the vocabulary is more restricted than series.

Well, if you play qualitiy video games in english, you may learn tons of vocabulary... I mean, games like Zelda, or Fire Emblem, or old RPGs... These are good !
And there are some books that may be interesting. The last one I read was The Hobbit. Both funny and useful !  :D

The english teacher I had two years ago had us watching movies to improve our english. Actually, this man was a real GOD ! I never had a better teacher !

There are movies that are easier to understand than others... One of the easiest is Star Wars III : Revenge of the Siths. It can even be understood without subtitles  :ninja:

I bought a dragon ball on eBay. I recognize some hiragana but there is too onomatopoeia and so few kanji to me. However it's really fun to have some Japanese comics in Japanese in my library. Maybe i'll buy all dragon ball in Japanese for the fun. :lol:

I've the first Zelda one my Game Boy Advance, when I played, I didn't see taht the texts were in Englis, I read it like it was French.
I'm agree with Mooglwy to say Final Fantasy are better games than Zelda to leran more vocabulary in English :D

Personnally, I think that the best way to improve your english is to buy a MMORPG, and play on an English server.
It's a lot better than playing simple RPG like FF or dragon Quest because you'll be talking with real people, so you will never stop learning.  -_-

I find that to write English is easier than to speak about it because it's necessary to have the good pronunciation and we look more for our words. In the primary I found easy English but in the secondary it's not so simple

Oh my... It's been a long time I went here! Well, majority of people says that their English is bad but not at all. You (almost) all speak English very well. The only mistake I saw is in Binbin's post. It's : "Yesterday, all my trouble seems so far away"!

Personaly, I think that it's easier to speak in English than writing. In writing I'm so a shit, I never write words correctly. Anyways, I use English a lot more for speaking to people, except in English class.

For those who saw the movie, I would like to have your critics and how you found him compared with both precedents. I really didn't like PoC 3. The firstwas a very good entertainment, the second just made you spend an afternoon, but this one is very average. Of course, a movie with pirates just can't be bad, but the plot in this one is quite complicated for nothing, and the screenplay of Depp is not as good as we could have expected.

Personally, the first was better than the second (even if I never really succeeded in seeing the beginning :D). The first, it was where the story starts, the beginning of the adventure, thus I preferred. The second was not so badly either.

Yes, the dictionnary is a good thing, very useful to translate words between different languages :P

But if you can speak or read or write bt yourself without the dictionnary, it's still better^^! I know thus : when you begin to read in English, you always need a dictionnary. When you are at the end of your first or second book, you don't need morever the dictionnary, you can understand the sentences without understanding all the words ^_^

But dictionnary is a good help if you don't read every days in English :)

It reminds me what I once said to a friend: when you learn a foreign language, the best way to tell if you master it or not is to say what you think when you speak. If you concentrate more on how you're speaking, how you make your sentences, how you use your tenses and so on, you aren't masterful yet. You truly master the language when you concentrate more on WHAT you're saying rather on HOW you say it.

I like the printed dictionaries, they are more reliable than those on Internet. Sometimes the sites of translation translate really badly, while with a dictionary, it's a little longer but at least your sentences have much less faults.

Why did I up this thread? Because I think that english is very important and everyone should be praticing ^_^.

So let's start with an easy question:

What's your favorite Tv show/anime? And why? (yes there's only me to ask a question like that :mrgreen:)

My favorite Tv show is Charmed, I like it a lot because I like show where there magic, demon and stuff like that :).
My favorite Anime is Kanon, I like it because its sad,funny and touching at the same time. Kanon really know how to touch and change your feeling as your seeing it.

Now everyone come there and post, but don't forget, only in english !

I have several favorite TV shows, among which the IT Crowd, the Office (US version), and the Simpsons.

As for animes, I especially like Samurai Champloo and the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I'm currently watching True Tears, which is quite good.

I like Charmed a lot as well. There's another show I discovered a month ago and loved it, it's a sitcom called That '70s Show (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_That_%2770s_Show_episodes):

I think this show stands out among other sitcoms because of it's humor (yes, it IS funny), shame that most of excellent jokes are left out in the French translation. It also features some memorable features, such as very elaborate dream sequences (often spoofing other shows, music videos, and even fairy tales), and "circles", scenes when the characters just smoked a joint (no actual smoking is shown, only smoke is visible), sit in a circle with the camera turning from one character to another, and say absolutely meaningless and hilarious things.
The Show started and ended the same years as Charmed did, it also has eight seasons. Give this show a try, it's really awesome.

Oh, and for you americanophiles out there, there's the daily show, by John Stewart. It's not really a TV Series, but it's AWESOME :D

Nothing much except hanging out with my gf.

I'm fluent in both French and English which is pretty natural for people living in Quebec nowadays (Actually is because I'm an internet lurker and I watched too many anime subbed in English). Actually I'd say that my written English is better than my written French but when it comes down to oral communication then I'm more at ease with French. I know enough Japanese for slight conversation but I've not been studying it a lot lately.

I'm sure you meant to use 'concerning myself' as 'me concernant' and while it might be correct to spell it as such I believe it sounds quite awkward. Instead I'd suggest you to use 'about me'. Also 'card sound' should be written 'sound card' because 'card sound' means 'a sound that comes from the card'.
There are some other mistakes there and there but they're not that bad.

Since we're in this thread to get more used to English I thought it'd be a good idea for me to correct whatever I saw fit. I don't mean to sound haughty by doing this and if you do not like me correcting your post then I will stop doing it.

I've been improving a lot lately even though I can't practice oral conversation at all, TV shows gives me some pronunciation examples (yay shameless american accent). Playing LoL and following several streamers along with related social medias helps a lot with common English, much better than what we're taught in classrooms imo.

Indeed, I did the same mistake in my first post here. It's because we always say "topic" when we talk about a thread in French... why? :P

I have some difficulties with the differences between can, may, could, shall, should, etc. and with the "non plus".

If would be fun if people could start other topi... I mean threads like this, but for other languages like Spanish.

These are all words you will get used to by practicing. I have no idea what you are talking about for that "non plus" though.
I think I may have already started a Japanese thread but there was nobody else who was able to speak Japanese :/.

I remember your Japanese thread. It's true that except English, there are not a lot of other languages well known by the members of this forum.
