Some Zelda-like games
« on: February 14, 2018, 07:45:21 pm »
I found some interesting projects of other devs working on Zelda-like games. Some info here:

-The waking cloack (this looks a lot like Link's Awakening in style, very charming):
http://www.thewakingcloak.com/

-This man (https://twitter.com/_t3nshi?lang=en), a.k.a. baranot3nshi, seems to be working on a Zelda-like game too, and the art is really awesome:

but his project seems not to have a name yet.

Let's hope these Zelda-like games, and many others, get finished someday and they become as good as they seem.

Another Zelda-like project looking good, under development by @Goodlyay, on twitter:

I think I didn't mention this project before (Hazelnut Bastille): https://twitter.com/manaaflow
It's the coolest Zelda-like game listed on this topic, and looks so awesome!

Certainly does look cool- and professional! They've got a pretty responsible 4-year anticipated development window.

I read this interview with one of the developers too:
http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/03/feature_snes-style_rpg_hazelnut_bastille_coming_to_switch_with_secret_of_mana_composer_in_tow

You can tell he's thought a lot about this type of game's design. Interesting especially to me are his thoughts on level design prioritizing clarity of collisions and readability. That's something a lot of modern games (in our attempts to use our technology to make them pretty) overlook (looking at you, hyper light drifter).

The puzzles of A Link to the Past are all very tame

I don't agree !   :(
ALTTP has smart puzzles, some harder, some easier, and globally the game has just the right difficulty. Play ALTTP when you're 10 years old, without any help, makes the game sometimes pretty hard. It's easy to say that ALTTP is easy now that we have 1 billion video walkthroughs online, and that every other game after just copied its puzzles. I don't like when people put down classics like this. Same for music. Yes early Beatles stuff can be quite simple. But hey, they had to invent everything from scratch !

These ones, probably mentioned in other posts, look good too (graphically):

-"Elysis", by Fervir (@blankthevidya on twitter) ‏
https://fervir.itch.io/elysis
(It seems action focused only, which something I don't like: I prefer a balance between puzzles and battles.)

-"Lenna's Inception",
https://lennasinception.com/
https://tccoxon.itch.io/lennas-inception
https://twitter.com/tccoxon
(This one generates all the world and dungeons randomly, which is something I don't completely like either.)

Everyone's probably already seen this, but Moonlighter comes out next month:

Swords of Ditto just launched on Steam this week:

Faeland was just funded on Kickstarter within a week's time:

I saw it running at Pax but didn't get a chance to play.

Also, not the right time period, but Eastward looks very nice:

The art of those games look really awesome.
For some reason, Swords of Ditto has bad ratings on Steam.

Yeah, I picked up Sword Of Ditto last month on Steam, and I there's some really nice aspects to it, but I can see why it'd piss people off. It's trying to be a rogue-lite where you lose everything on death, but that aspect doesn't feel as well-executed as other similar games. When I die in Spelunky, Vagante, or Dead Cells, I usually want to try again and see if I do better... in Swords Of Ditto death just makes me feel like quitting out of boredom.

The game has potential, but I think they needed to spend more time refining the balance of the permadeath mechanic and which things you need to collect all over again on each run.

By the way, Elysis has a tumblr now where the latest progress is being shown off. It's looking really good:
